What Music Works Best for a Wedding Drinks Reception?

By Stuart Toogood, acoustic wedding guitarist, Worcestershire

The drinks reception is one of my favourite parts of a wedding day to play at. The formality of the ceremony has passed, everyone is relaxed, the speeches are still ahead, and the atmosphere is genuinely joyful. The music has a different job to do here.

Background music that people notice

During the ceremony, the music is the focus. During the drinks reception, it needs to be present and beautiful without competing with conversation. Guests are catching up with people they may not have seen for years, the music should enhance that atmosphere, not interrupt it.

I tend to play a relaxed mix of familiar songs during drinks receptions: Beatles ballads, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, a little Fleetwood Mac, some classic film themes. Music that guests recognise and smile at, but do not feel compelled to stop talking to listen to. That is the sweet spot.

Inside or outside?

One of the things I enjoy about drinks receptions is that they often happen outdoors when the weather is kind. I have a full outdoor PA setup and can play comfortably outside for any size of reception. The sound carries well across open spaces and there is something particularly lovely about acoustic guitar in a garden or courtyard.

If the weather forces everyone inside, that is no problem, I am equally comfortable playing indoors and can adapt the volume and mix accordingly.

How long does the drinks reception usually last?

Most drinks receptions run for about 90 minutes to two hours. During that time, I play continuously with very short breaks. I have a large repertoire, so there is no danger of the same song being heard twice, I tend to play well over 30 songs during a typical drinks reception set.

Can you move between locations?

Yes. If the drinks reception starts outside and then moves inside, or if the couple needs music in more than one space, I can move. I always talk through the logistics of the day with couples before the wedding so I know exactly where I need to be and when.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you play at a drinks reception?
Most drinks receptions run for 90 minutes to two hours. I play continuously across that time with very short breaks, usually two sets of 45 to 60 minutes. I have a large enough repertoire that there is no danger of the same song being heard twice.
Can you play outdoors for the drinks reception?
Yes, and most drinks receptions I play are outside when the weather allows. I bring a full outdoor PA setup and can cover the space comfortably. If the weather changes and everyone moves inside, I can adapt quickly. Just mention any outdoor plans in advance so I can bring the right equipment.
What songs do you play at a drinks reception?
I play a mix of familiar songs that guests will recognise and enjoy without feeling compelled to stop talking to listen, Beatles ballads, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, classic film themes. The goal is warm, present music that enhances the atmosphere rather than dominating it. You can also give me a list of favourite songs or genres and I will shape the set around those.
Can you move between the ceremony room and drinks area?
Yes. I always talk through the layout and logistics of your venue before the day so I know exactly where I need to be and when. If there is a gap between the ceremony ending and the drinks reception starting, I will manage the transition smoothly.
